FAQS

Summer 2017 FAQs

We've been leaning in and stepping up for a season. Now, we're getting ready to break through as we "Take Our Campus to the Next Level."

When will the campus improvements begin?

Since we are committed to “paying as we go” all facilities and infrastructure improvements will be done in phases.

What is the timeline of improvements?

Here is what we hope to see happen in the next 18 months as funding allows:
Improvements will begin in the Sanctuary (August 2017)
Improvements will begin in the Commons/Children’s Ministry (January 2018)
Improvements will begin to the exterior of our campus (Fall 2018)
As we have said, all of this depends on our ability to pay as we go.

What changes can we expect in our sanctuary?

Our goal is to create an environment in our sanctuary that is cohesive, clean and makes sense for who we are now. We intend to create an environment that complements the worship experience by improving the sound system and modernizing our space while maintaining an air of the sacred.  In order to do this, we know some of the things we’ve grown accustomed to seeing may go away.

What about the pews?

The budget for the planned improvements does not currently include seating. While we know that the pews are a draw for some, they are not for everyone. We also know they are not in good condition nor of the best quality, so they will likely need to be dealt with sometime in the future.  But, for now, they will remain unchanged.

Will the sound be improved?

Yes! At last, we will be able to have a sound system, updated to handle today’s technology that is appropriate for the sanctuary space. We can all look forward to better articulation of speaking voices and a more enjoyable quality of sound with which to sing along.

Will we be able to see the stained glass?

We are planning to replace the shades covering the stained glass windows on the east and west walls, allowing them to be enjoyed when possible and closed when necessary.

What about the cross, altar, and other things to focus on during worship?

Sacred anchors, as we like to call them, are a very important part of worship at St. John. We intend to better integrate screens and other technology to enhance focus on these sacred anchors, especially during times of reflection such a prayer and Holy Communion.

What about the organ?

Organ Update: Efforts are still underway to identify a church with whom we can bless our organ. For now, the organ is being stored in place, and can be removed from the back of the Sanctuary when a recipient is finalized.  (October 13, 2017)

In order to make additions to our Sanctuary space, we understand some things will have to be removed. While the organ has served us faithfully in the past, it is no longer a tool that will reach those farthest away from the love of Jesus. Our hope for that space is to build an area, dedicated for Baptisms, to remind us of our Baptisms and to reflect the high value we hold on life change.

What about the red carpet?

Since the reconfiguration of the stage area will necessitate a replacement of flooring, it makes sense to remove all of the worn red carpeting at the same time. Our plan is to replace it with a more neutral flooring that will complement the décor of the Sanctuary.

Will the construction interfere with regular worship services?

Thankfully, no! With some creativity in scheduling and planning, the worship services that you enjoy every weekend will not be interrupted. Some of that creativity may include an occasional exciting change in location. If that happens, we’ll make sure there’s plenty of notice.

Are there any changes planned to the lobby or parent’s room?

The budget for improvements does not include any changes to the lobby areas. Please know that all areas that welcome guests remain a priority. But for now, no major changes are planned.

I am excited to support these exciting changes; can I still give to NEXT?

Absolutely! Click here to find out more about all the exciting things that are happening through NEXT and join us in committing financially to the vision.

Funding Our Vision

HOW DOES NEXT DIFFER FROM PREVIOUS CAMPAIGNS

Previous campaigns have asked for a 3-year commitment of giving “over and above” what people were already giving in order to fund special projects. NEXT is a 2-year commitment which utilizes a “ONE FUND” approach that resources all ministry—not just the special projects—because everything we do in ministry matters. The NEXT goal of $11 million is the projected budget for everything we are currently doing plus what we need to be doing over the next two years.

HOW DOES THE ONE FUND APPROACH TO NEXT CHANGE MY GIVING TO SUPPORT THE GENERAL BUDGET, MISSION APPEALS, CARE MINISTRIES, AND OTHER SPECIAL OFFERINGS?

During this two-year period, every contribution to God’s work at St. John Church is a contribution to our NEXT initiative. Every aspect of the ministry vision God is calling us towards will be funded through NEXT. There will not be separate funds. Every gift made will go into the same NEXT fund. Therefore, every weekend becomes an opportunity to celebrate and contribute toward what God is doing in and through St. John Church.

IS NEXT JUST A WAY TO RAISE MORE MONEY?

Money is an idol for many of us, and we’re working to actively combat that reality. Additionally, Jesus said, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” (Luke 12:48b) As our world continues to spin out of control, we have a real opportunity, to lean in, step up, and break out with our time, prayer, relationships, and giving. We’re working together to make an incredible impact in West County and beyond. NEXT is not simply about collecting extra resources; it’s about joining our resources together and becoming part of a significant movement of God in our families, our community and our world.

WHY IS 100% PARTICIPATION SO IMPORTANT?

We want everyone to participate in NEXT because we believe that everyone from children to grandparents can be blessed by learning to give generously, trusting God to provide for our needs and being part of something that is making a difference in the lives of others.

WHAT IF I’VE NEVER EVEN GIVEN TO ST. JOHN CHURCH BEFORE?

If you have never given financially to St. John Church, NEXT is for you! NEXT is an opportunity for you to make an intentional decision to begin your generosity journey. When you begin trusting God with your finances, you will begin finding more peace in this area of your life. God will bless you in unexpected ways, even in difficult circumstances.

WHAT IF I CAN’T AFFORD TO GIVE RIGHT NOW?

Even in times of scarcity, God wants our hearts. The widow who gave her last mite did not make a very big financial contribution, but Jesus said she gave the largest gift of all. NEXT is about all of us coming together, giving generously, and trusting God to do the rest.

WHAT IF I’M SEVERELY IN DEBT RIGHT NOW? AM I STILL SUPPOSED TO GIVE?

It’s important for generosity to be a part of our life at every point. If you are in the process of paying off debt, we commend you, and you should continue to do so. But, the Bible does not teach that we withhold giving until we are debt-free. When we honor God first with our giving, he promises to be involved with every other aspect of finances. If you are not actively paying off your debt, consider attending one of our Dave Ramsey financial classes. You can learn more at stjstl.net/fpu.
